June 23rd, 1998: Converge, Today Is the Day, Boy Sets Fire, Brother's Keeper, Seventyeightdays @ Phantasmagoria, Wheaton, MD

Here's another flyer for a show I couldn't make it to. I can't remember why. I was pretty bummed though, as I had never seen Converge or Today Is the Day at that point. Phantaz was a pretty cool spot for shows for a while. It was a record store, cafe, and venue all rolled into one. I saw some great bands and shows there, and booked a few as well. Jamie Arthurs booked this one, along with Chris, who's last name I can't remember. If you were at this show, tell us about it.

I was.. I'm trying to remember anything aside from boy sets fire talking a lot. I don't have your amazing memory for all these details!
I think I have some bad photos and probably some more commentary in a journal somewhere. I'll look for that stuff.
I do have this converge photo I believe from the show at the supreme imperial which I remember well.

Nice pic. That was during the Chop Shop era, with Cave In, Dillinger Escape Plan, Torn Apart, and someone else. I can't remember if I have that flyer or not. I guess we'll see in a few weeks. Thanks Kara!

I think my GF at the time wanted me to drive to this, but I was a total sissy about driving around the DC Beltway, so we just stayed home, ate popcorn and made out.

The end.

If I recall this was the first post-Petitioning Converge show in the DC/MD/VA area. I think the last time they played before this was '95 or so and they weren't really a known entity then.

Anyway Converge ruled, Today is the Day was pretty good, I was outside for Brother's Keeper, and Boy Whines on Microphone bored the shit out of me.

All of my Boy Sets Fire memories involve heckling or talking while someone else is giving a heartfelt speech. I'm pretty sure this is the tour where the singer was coming out of the closet and doing so onstage every night of tour.

This particular night, I guess someone had seen them the night before and yelled out "You did a better job of coming out LAST night!"

Funny aside to that story. I'd heard that from people who saw BSF a bunch of times in a row, that he said the same things in between songs every night, almost verbatim. I've kept that in my subconscious all these years and specifically tried really hard to not do that on Pulling Teeth tours. Sometimes the right words just work though.

Converge pretty much blew my mind at this show and BSF as usual would not shut the fuck up. Thats about all I remember.
